Though thousands of years old, yoga has become more popular during recent years. It is a form of exercise that is great for both the mind and body. In a fast-paced world, yoga provides a way to relieve stress and strengthen the body at the same time.
Some may think that you have to be flexible to perform yoga. It is actually quite the opposite. Yoga is the perfect type of exercise for someone looking to improve flexibility. Improved flexibility reduces your risk for injury. With yoga, you can lean to bend so you don’t break! You may never be able to place your foot behind your head, but with time and persistence you will become more flexible.
Another common myth is that you have to be able to perform each movement perfectly. As you start out, that may not be possible. Rather than pushing, pulling, and straining your body to complete the movement perfectly, ease into it. As your flexibility increases, so will your ability to do each movement. The best benefits of yoga come from slow, gentle, mindful movements.
